The Friends of the Institute of Archaeology
|
The Friends of the Institute of Archaeology is a nonprofit organization established in 1978 with the purpose of
supporting the activities of the Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University, and of fostering the dissemination
of knowledge about archaeology to those with either a general or professional interest in the subject.
Founders of the Friends of the Institute of Archaeology include George Majewsky, who is a former president, and the
late Jacob M. Alkow, who bequeathed funds for two departmental chairs, as well as a new building for the Department
and Institute of Archaeology. The incumbent president of the Friends is Cipora Swirsky.
In 1989, the Friends provided the Institute of Archaeology with seed money to establish a publishing program for
excavation reports of Institute-sponsored digs. Over the years, with the financial backing of the Friends, the
publishing program has

flourished into a major publisher of books and journals. To date, the Institute has published 21 monographs, and several
manuscripts are in various stages of preparation. In 2005, the long-awaited five-volume Lachish Excavation Report was published.
Friends activities include:
- Acquiring books for the Archaeology library, especially textbooks needed by students
- Providing the Institute photographic laboratory with cutting-edge equipment
- Awarding grants to worthy students
- Sponsoring lectures, including lecturers from abroad, and study tours
The Friends have also been supporters of one of the Institute's major archaeological digs, the Lachish Excavations. The Friends' first
project at Lachish, initiated by Mrs. Evelyn Stol, was the restoration and reconstruction of the Judean gate Level 3, destroyed in 701
BCE by Sennacherib, and of the Judean gate Level 2, destroyed in 586 BCE by Nebuchadnezzar. Jacob Alkow was a principal contributor to
this project, which took three years to complete.
Members of the Friends of the Institute of Archaeology enjoy lectures on archaeological subjects and take part in archaeological tours
in Israel and abroad. Member tours have already covered most of the archaeological sites in the Mediterranean basin.
