JANUARY 1st 1999 IN ISRAEL The National Student Association ended a six week strike without coming to an agreement with the Government. The 1998-99 school year opened on December 5th 1998, and will consist of two semesters of 12 weeks each. The first semester will end on February 19, 1999, and the second semester on June 26. The senior academic staff settled their wage dispute and commenced instruction on the same date. CONFERENCES Dr. Yossi Vardi, Chairman of ICQ and the recipient of the Miriam and Georg Faktor Entrepreneurial Award, was the guest speaker of Shiluvim, the Business Alumni Club of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering. He discussed "Business Models on the Internet." Deputy Chairman of Shiluvim Alon Barnea, Director of Developing Markets in Europe at Silicon Graphics, moderated the event. "Many Languages and Hebrew Culture: Translation of Books into Hebrew in the Beginning of the Yishuv" was the title of a conference held by the Entin Faculty of Humanities, the Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, and the Center for the Study of Eretz Israel and the Yishuv, on the occasion of the publication of Dr. Na'ama Sheffi's book, German in Hebrew. The Conference was chaired by Prof. Shulamit Volkov. The re-dedication of the Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine as "Founded by Alpha Omega" and the unveiling ceremony of the "Alpha Omega Wall of Fame" were held at TAU on the occasion of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity's annual conference, which was held in Israel. The speakers were Prof. Yoram Dinstein, TAU President, and Prof. Herbert Judes, Dean of the Dental School. Dr. Ben Williamowsky, Ralph Rothstein and Dr. Sonny Lefcoe unveiled the plaque with the School's new name. Dr. Donald Scharoff, International President of Alpha Omega, Dr. Sidney Tourial, Chairman of the O.A. Foundation, and Dr. Gordon Perlmutter, past President, unveiled the "Wall of Fame." Prof. Asher Susser of the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies presented a lecture entitled "Israel at 50 - The Dilemmas of Peace-Making in the Middle East." TAU's Prof. Itamar Rabinovich, former Israeli Ambassador to the US, delivered greetings at lunch. "Museum Architecture" was the title of the Katz Faculty of the Arts' conference marking the exhibition at the Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery, "Moshe Safdie: Museum Architecture 1971-1998." The opening lecture, entitled "The Museum as Urban Place," was delivered by architect Moshe Safdie. Ambassador of Canada to Israel David Berger and Mrs. Monica Berger held a reception at the Gallery. The School of Education held a memorial evening for Prof. Shimon Reshef in honor of the tenth anniversary of his passing away and the publication of his book, Hebrew Education in the Year of the National Homeland (1919-48) . Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. David Chen, Head of the School. The newly-published book, Passing to Eretz Israel: The Bricha and the Jewish Exodus via Austria after 1945, was introduced at a conference at TAU organized by Prof. Dan Diner, Head of TAU's Institute for German History, in the presence of Dr. Wolfgang Paul, Austrian Ambassador to Israel, and Dr. Ulf Hausbrandt, the Austrian cultural attache. The speakers were Prof. Rolf Steininger, Head of the Institute for Contemporary History, and Dr. Thomas Albrich, the author of the book, both of Innsbruck University. The book is the first of the Austria-Israel joint project "Austria-Israel: Political and Cultural Relations Since 1945" of the TAU Institute of German History; the Richard Koebner Centre for German History of the Hebrew University; and the Institute for Contemporary History, Leopold-Franzens University, Innsbruck, Austria. The inaugural concert for the new Steinway grand piano, gift of the TAU Friends in England and Scotland to TAU's Samuel Rubin Israeli Academy of Music, was performed by András Schiff at the Clairmont Auditorium. He performed works by Bach, Kurtag, Beethoven and Schuman. The Transportation Management and Research Institute of the Faculty of Management held its annual conference in memory of Mordechai Ben-Ari. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Gabriel Hendler, Head of the Institute, and Prof. Israel Zang, Faculty Dean. The Mordechai Ben-Ari Award winner was Kobi Shaim, PhD student of the Department of Electronics-Systems at the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering, for his research entitled, "Characterization of Disturbances and Their Cancelation in GPS-Based Flight Navigation Systems." "Synagogue and Prayer during Generations of Tradition" was the title of a conference held by the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies at the Entin Faculty of Humanities and the Cymbalista Synagogue and Jewish Heritage Center, and organized by Prof. Myron Lerner, Chairperson of the Department of Talmud. Greetings were delivered by Vice Rector Prof. Shimon Yankielowicz; Humanities Dean Prof. Marcelo Dascal; Head of the Rosenberg School Prof. Yair Hoffman; Director of the Cymbalista Center Prof. Aron Dotan; and Prof. Lerner. The exhibition "3=1: Three Directorial Interpretations of One Play, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Becket" has opened at the Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery. Greetings were delivered by Prof. Shimon Lev-Ari, Curator of the Exhibition; Prof. Mordechai Omer, Curator of the Gallery; and Prof. Eli Rozik-Rosen, Dean of the Katz Faculty of the Arts. The Buchmann Faculty of Law held a conference entitled "Public Interest Law," followed by a fair held by organizations active in the public service, organized by Prof. Menachem Mautner, Associate Dean. The Katz Faculty of the Arts held a multidisciplinary conference entitled "Interpretation in the Arts." Greetings at the opening session were delivered by TAU Rector Prof. Nili Cohen; Dean of Arts Prof. Eli Rozik-Rosen; and Head of the TAU Samuel Rubin Israeli Academy of Music, Prof. Noam Sheriff. The Business Forum of the TAU Israeli Friends Association, chaired by Prof. Israel Borovits, visited the computer labs of the School of Mathematics. Exact Sciences Dean Prof. Uri Liberman and Head of the School Prof. Micha Sharir gave introductions. Prof. Paul Krugman of MIT delivered the keynote address, "The Global Financial Mess," at the cornerstone-laying ceremony of the Eitan Berglas School of Economics building. Concluding remarks in the following panel discussion were delivered by TAU's Prof. Jacob Frenkel, Governor of the Bank of Israel. TAU President Prof. Yoram Dinstein; Rector Prof. Nili Cohen; former TAU President Prof. Haim Ben-Shahar; Director-General of Bank Hapoalim Emanuel Sivan; Chairman of Delta Galil Dov Lautman; family members; and the donors signed the cornerstone scroll. "End-of-Life Medical Decision-Making: Sanctity of Life and Death with Dignity" was the title of the three-day conference of the Buchmann Faculty of Law, the Minerva Center for Human Rights, and the Cegla Institute for Comparative and Private International Law. Introductory remarks were delivered by conference organizer Prof. Amos Shapira, incumbent of the Lubowski Chair of Law and Biomedical Ethics. Prof. David Weiss Halivni, a TAU Honorary Doctor, delivered a guest lecture entitled, "Rabina and Rav Ashi - Were They the Talmud Editors and if Not Them, Who?", at TAU's Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies. The International Forum of the English Speaking Israeli Friends Association and TAU's Department of Political Science hosted Euripides L. Evriviades, Ambassador of Cyprus. Prof. Aharon Kleiman, the Forum Chairman, chaired the event. "New Records - New Perspectives: World War II, the Holocaust, and the Rise of the State of Israel" was the title of conference co-organized by TAU, Bar Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, the IDF Archives, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Edgar Astaire and Sons Charitable Trust. President of the Israeli Friends of TAU Raya Jaglom held a Chanukah celebration honoring the International Forum of the English Speaking Friends and the Department of Political Science. Greetings were delivered by Rector Prof. Nili Cohen and Chairman of the International Forum Prof. Aharon Klieman. Among the guests were ambassadors who had delivered lectures within the framework of the Forum. Prof. Frances Ferguson of Johns Hopkins University delivered a guest lecture entitled "Envy Rising: The Body and Emotion" at an event organized by the Cohen Porter Fund of the English Department, Entin Faculty of Humanities. Prof. Raul Hilberg, Head of the Department of Political Science, University of Vermont, and author of the book The Destruction of European Jews, delivered a lecture on "The Future of Holocaust Research," at an event organized by the Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences. Opening remarks were delivered by Dean Prof. Moshe Semyonov and Prof. Joseph Grodzinsky. The American-Israel Friendship League in cooperation with TAU's School of Education hosted an Education Mission to Israel which included a two-day seminar at the School. The Marcel and Annie Adams Institute for Business Management Information Systems at TAU's Faculty of Management-Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration held its annual conference in cooperation with the ILA-Israel Information Technologies Association entitled "Electronic Commerce: Vision and Reality." Greetings were given by Amiram Schor, Chairman of ILA, and Prof. Phillip Ein-Dor, Head of the Adams Institute. Lectures were delive red by Dr. Micha Engel, Senior Executive of Discount Investments, and Prof. Niv Ahituv, incumbent of TAU's Marko and Lucie Chaoul Chair for Research in Information Evaluation. Recipients of the 1998 Adams Institute award were the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange for integrating TACT - Tel Aviv Continuous Trading, and the City of Kfar Saba for developing GIS Map Server. Prof. Leonid Pastur of the University of Paris VII and the Institute for Low Temperature Physics, Kharkov, Ukraine, held a special seminar at TAU's School of Mathematics entitled "Unitary Invariant Ensembles of Random Matrices and Related Problems of Analysis." The Herczeg Institute for Aging held a conference in honor of the publication of the Handbook on Aging and Mental Health, edited by Prof. Jacob Lomranz. The Eitan Berglas School of Economics, Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, held an international conference entitled "Consumption, Saving and Regional Integration" in cooperation with the Bank of Israel Research Department; the Armand Hammer Fund for Economic Cooperation in the Middle East; and the Pinhas Sapir Center for Development. Within the framework of the Conference participants were invited to attend the Pinhas Sapir Center Panel on Consumption and Saving, moderated by TAU's Prof. Dani Tsiddon. Lectures were delivered by Prof. Angus Deaton of Princeton University and Dr. Rafi Melnick of the Bank of Israel. APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS Prof. Yoram Dinstein, TAU President, was awarded Alpha Omega's Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to dental health in Israel, at the Annual Conference held in Jerusalem. Among the former recipients are Albert Einstein, Jona Salk, and Ephraim Katzir. Ms. Tzila Yaniv, administrator of TAU's Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, was awarded an honorary membership. Dr. Itamar Borovitch, Director-General of the Phoenix Insurance Company, was elected the Chairman of the Executive Council of the TAU-affiliated Meyerhoff Technical College, replacing Prof. Adi Zaidman of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering. Dr. Borovitch is a graduate of TAU's School of Physics and Astronomy and a member of the TAU Executive Council. With Rules, a film by TAU graduate Dover Kosashvili, was awarded best film in the fiction category at the 1998 Mugrabi Student Film Competition of the Department of Film and Television, Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of the Arts. Movers was awarded best documentary and the audience's favorite; Alon Abutbul was awarded the best actor award, which was donated by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts; and King George Street was awarded the best director award by the Mugrabi Fund. The Cipputti Award at the 16th Turin Film Festival in Italy was awarded to Daniel Syrkin for his graduation film, And Now Rachmaninoff, produced while he was a student at TAU's Department of Film and Television. Prof. Meir Feder and Prof. Emanuel Marom of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering were elected IEEE Fellows. VISITS Minister of Education Itzhak Levy visited the School of Education and met with Rector Prof. Nili Cohen, Head of the School Prof. David Chen, and senior faculty. They discussed major issues of educational policy in Israel and ways to create a dialogue between the Ministry and the School. Prof. Gianni Toniolo, Dean of Venice International University, visited TAU. He met with Prof. Asher Ovadiah, Chairman of the Department of Art History, and with Prof. Arie Nadler, Head of the Peres Institute for Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation. Prof. Toniolo was hosted for lunch by Rector Prof. Nili Cohen, Vice Rector Prof. Shimon Yankielowicz, and TAU's Prof. Itamar Rabinovich. Dr. Rodrigo Carreras Jimenez, Ambassador of Costa Rica, made his first visit to TAU, accompanied by Prof. Jacobo Grunhaus, scientific attache. They met with President Prof. Yoram Dinstein and visited the Cymbalista Synagogue and Jewish Heritage Center, the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, and the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies. Attorney Soli Jehangir Sorabjee, Attorney General of India, and Indian Ambassador to Israel Ranjan Mathai were met by President Prof. Dinstein while visiting TAU and were hosted to lunch by Dean of the Buchmann Faculty of Law Prof. Eli Lederman. ABROAD The award-winning film made by TAU Department of Film and Television graduate Dan Katzir, Out for Love...Be Back Soon, was screened for AFTAU members in New York, Philadelphia, Palm Beach, and Delray Beach in tribute to Jules Love, Executive Vice President of AFTAU. The following new officers were elected at a festive meeting of AFTAU's Board of Directors, attended by TAU President Prof. Yoram Dinstein: Alan Aufzien, Chairman; Shalom Yoran, Vice Chairman; and Alvin Gindel and Rollin Sontag, Vice Presidents. The TAU French Friends organized a dinner-lecture entitled "The Israeli Economy in between East and West" in honor of Oudi Recanati, Chairman of the Discount Bank, hosted by President of the French Friends Hugo Ramniceanu and President of the Discount Bank Joseph Assaraf, and held under the auspices of the President of the French Senate, Christian Poncelet. A seminar entitled "The Middle East, Iran and the Peace Process" was held in Mexico City, organized by TAU's Mexican Friends Association. Lectures were given at the Institute Matias Romero of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Autonomous University of Mexico. A reception was held at the home of Mrs. Fina Maus. TAU President Prof. Yoram Dinstein participated in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Free University of Berlin. The festive event was hosted by Prof. Johann Wilhelm Gerlach, President of the Free University. COMING EVENTS

The TAU Study Cruise on the Aegean Sea will take place from June 7-16, 1999.
