IN ISRAEL - BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETING

Four hundred and seventy-five guests from abroad and some 200 Israelis participated in the 1997 Board of Governors Meeting - a record attendance.

The following ceremonies took place:

A Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa was conferred upon Justice Meir Shamgar, former President of the Supreme Court of Israel; Prof. Shmuel N. Eisenstadt; Mr. Max Webb; Mr. Adolfo M. Smolarz; Mr. Yuli Ofer; Prof. Paul Josef Crutzen; and Prof. Jozef S. Schell. Honorary Fellowships were awarded to Mr. Myer Bick and Mr. Nikolaus Hensel. Justice Meir Shamgar responded on behalf of the recipients with a lecture entitled "On Liberal Democracy."

Five major facilities were inaugurated:

The Gitter-Smolarz Library of Life Sciences and Medicine was inaugurated in the presence of donors Miriam and Adolfo Smolarz from Argentina and Benno Gitter from Israel, Chairman of TAU’s Board of Governors. Honorary Doctor Prof. Jozef S. Schell of the Max-Planck Institute for Plant Breeding, Germany, delivered a lecture entitled "The Progress in Biological Sciences and Technologies: Exciting Possibilities - Difficult Ethical Choices."

The W.A. Minkoff Building was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Minkoff of Geneva, Switzerland. A lecture was delivered by Mr. Elyakim Rubinstein, Attorney-General of Israel.

The laying of the cornerstone of The Max Webb Family School of Language Building was held in the presence of Max and Anna Webb and family from Los Angeles. A lecture was deliverd by Prof. Avner Ziv, entitled "Humor in Language Teaching.”

The Albert and Elba Cuenca Boulevard was dedicated in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Cuenca of Paris. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Minna Rozen, incumbent of the Chair of the History and Culture of the Jews in Salonika and Greece, entitled "The Heritage of Salonikan Jewry - The Future of the Past.”

The Argentina Auditorium was inaugurated in the presence of Polly Deutsch, Chairperson of the Argentinean Friends. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Shimon Shamir, former Israeli Ambassador to Egypt and Jordan, entitled "Israeli Diplomacy in the Arab World."

Four research institutes were inaugurated:

The Shalom and Varda Yoran Institute for Human Genome Research was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Yoran of New York and Israel. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Batsheva Bonne-Tamir, the Institute’s first head, entitled "Unfolding the Human Genome: Meeting the Challenge."

At the inauguration of the the Adler Research Center for Child Welfare and Protection, Prof. Zahava Solomon, Head of the Center, delivered a lecture entitled "Paradise Lost: Shattered Childhood."

The Joan and Jaime Constantiner Institute for Molecular Genetics inaugural ceremony included an address by Prof. Ephraim Katzir, former President of the State of Israel. Prof. Gerald Cohen, Head of the Institute, delivered a lecture entitled "The Coming of Age of Molecular Genetics and Making a New Global View of Biology." Jaime Constantiner and his sons from Mexico and the US were present.

The Max Perlman Center for Global Business was inaugurated in the presence of donors Steffi Perlman and Alina and Michael Perlman from Sao Paolo, Brazil. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Niv Ahituv, Head of the Center, entitled "Implications of Information Technology on Global Business Management." Keynote speaker at the ceremony was Robert Center, Vice Chairman of Ernst & Young International.

Eleven Chairs were inaugurated:

The Myriam Lebach Chair in Molecular Neurodegeneration. Lectures were delivered by Prof. Robert D. Terry, University of California, San Diego, on "Alzheimer's Disease: How It All Began," and by the Chair’s incumbent Prof. Daniel M. Michaelson, on: "Alzheimer's Disease Research: Hurdles and Hopes." Sylvia and Ernesto Galperin from Argentina represented the family.

The Branco Weiss Chair for Research in Child Development and Education, inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Branco Weiss, from Switzerland. A lecture was presented by the Chair’s incumbent, Prof. Sidney Strauss, entitled "The Wondrous World of Children and Education."

The Chair for Swiss-Israeli Cultural Cooperation, inaugurated in the presence of the Swiss Ambassador to Israel, Pierre Monod. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Yosef Gorny, Head of TAU’s Chaim Weizmann Institute for Research on Zionism, entitled "In Basel I Founded the Jewish State - The Future of Israel-Diaspora Relations."

The Raquel and Manuel Klachky Chair in Subsurface Hydrology, inaugurated in the presence of Mrs. Raquel Klachky from Mexico and her son Roberto Klachky and his wife, from Israel. A lecture was delivered by incumbent Prof. Gideon Dagan, entitled "Engineering Sciences vs. Natural Sciences - The Case of Hydrology."

The Robert Raynor Chair in Environmental Conservation Research, inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Raynor of Australia. A lecture was delivered by incumbent Prof. Yossi Loya, entitled "Conservation of Coral Reefs in the Gulf of Eilat."

The Parvis and Pouran Nazarian Chair for Modern Iranian Studies, inaugurated in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Nazarian from Los Angeles and Ambassador of Canada to Israel David Berger. A lecture was delivered by the Chairperson of TAU’s Department of Middle Eastern and African History, Prof. David Menashri, entitled "Iranian Nationalism and the Islamic Revolution."

The Aron and Erna Heertje Chair for Visiting Professors in Economics, attended by Mrs. Erna Heertje and her son Prof. Arnold Heertje of the University of Amsterdam. Prof. Heertje delivered the Chair's inaugural lecture on "Technical Change and Welfare Economics."

The Alfred P. Slaner Chair in Anti-Semitism and Racism, endowed by Ruta and Felix Zandman from Philadelphia. A lecture was delivered by Dr. Dina Porat, Head of the Project for the Study of Anti-Semitism at TAU, entitled "Anne Frank Today - Remembrance vs. Denial," in the presence of the donors.

The Carol and Melvin S. Taub Chair in Applied Medical Physics, inaugurated in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Taub, from New Jersey. The Chair’s incumbent, Prof. Avraham Katzir, of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, presented a demonstration of innovative laser techniques entitled "Light in Medicine."

The Hannelore Kipp Chair in the Study of Art History, in the presence of Hannelore and Dr. (Hon.) Karl-Heinz Kipp from Switzerland. The Chair incumbent, Prof. Asher Ovadiah, spoke on "Symbolism in Jewish Works of Art in Late Antiquity.”

The Jack and Lisa Yael Chair in Comparative Economics, in the presence of donors Jack and Lisa Yael from Argentina. Prof. Jacob A. Frenkel, Governor of the Bank of Israel and a faculty member of TAU’s Eitan Berglas School of Economics, delivered an address at the inauguration. Prof. Leonardo Leiderman, also of the Berglas School and the Senior Director of the Research Department of the Bank of Israel, delivered a lecture entitled "Inflation, Stabilization and Economic Growth: A Comparative Perspective."

Five scholarship and research funds were inaugurated:

The TAU French Friends Scholarship Fund - A lecture was delivered by Prof. Eli Barnavi, Director of TAU’s Morris E. Curiel Center for International Studies, on "Fifty Years of Franco-Israeli Relations."

The Lester and Sally Entin Fund for Medical Research in the Area of Pernicious Anemia. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Uri Seligsohn of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine's Hematology Department, entitled "New Aspects of Vitamin B12 Deficiency."

A lecture entitled "Cell to Cell Talk: The Language of the Next Century," was delivered by Prof. Haim Tal, Dean of TAU’s Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, at a ceremony marking the first million dollars raised for the Alpha Omega campaign, “Focus on the Future.”

The Tali Gordon and Inbar Attia Scholarship Funds were inaugurated in the presence of the families of the two TAU students who were killed by a terrorist attack. A lecture entitled "Political Leadership in the 21st Century" was delivered by Prof. Michael Keren of the Gershon H. Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences.

A Tribute to the Magbit Foundation of Greater Los Angeles - Student Loan and Grant Program was held in the presence of Dr. Victory; Parvis Nazarian; Nasser Nazarian, the Magbit Chairman; and Jona Goldrich, Chairman of AFTAU’s Western Region.

Four annual prizes were awarded:

Mr. Dan Propper, President of the Manufacturers Association of Israel, was awarded the 1997 Hugo Ramniceanu Prize in Economics in the presence of the TAU French Friends President, Mr. Hugo Ramniceanu. Mr. Propper delivered a lecture entitled "Israeli Industry Towards the 21st Century." Mr. Propper donated the Prize to TAU.

The Henri Glasberg Prize was awarded to Mirit Sidi, Efrat Cohen, Danielle Alexandroff, Sigal Shahav, and Yael Ben-Avraham. The President’s Award for Volunteer Students was awarded to Lior Atar.

The first Adler Prize for Child Welfare was awarded to Reuma Weizman, wife of the President of Israel, who could not attend but sent a message.

Social events around the Board:

Kabbalat Shabbat Festive Dinner for Overseas Guests, hosted by TAU Chancellor Sir Leslie Porter and Dame Shirley Porter; Buffet Reception marking the opening of the 1997 annual Board Meeting hosted by the Chairman of the Board of Governors Benno Gitter and Dr. Ilana Ben Ami, preceded by a concert by students of the Samuel Rubin Israeli Academy of Music; Reception in honor of the recipients of Honorary Degrees of TAU, held in the Habima National Theater, hosted by Professor Yoram Dinstein and Mrs. Ada Dinstein; Program for spouses - fashion show, presented by "Gottex," hosted by Mrs. Ada Dinstein; the Benno Gitter Concert by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Pinchas Steinberg, in honor of members of the Board; Farewell Reception for overseas members hosted by the Chairman of the Executive Council Moshe Porath and Mrs. Porath; Galilee tour, "In the Footsteps of King Solomon, Jesus Christ and A.D. Gordon," guided by TAU Profs. Asher Ovadiah and Nurith Kena'an Kedar.

IN ISRAEL - GENERAL

The TAU Senate elected Prof. Nili Cohen as Rector of TAU for a four year term. Prof. Cohen, of the Buchmann Faculty of Law, has been serving as Vice Rector for the last three years. She will assume office in mid-August.

Prof. Judah M. Eisenberg of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, was elected Vice Rector. He will assume office in mid-August.

The TAU Student Union together with TAU held the annual memorial ceremony for TAU students and employees killed in action in Israel’s wars. Addresses were delivered by poet Nathan Zach; Vice Rector, Prof. Nili Cohen; and Student Union Chairman, Eran Weintraub.

The Holocaust Memorial Ceremony was held at the Schreiber Square and the David and Fela Shapell Holocaust and Heroism Square with the participation of Rector Dan Amir; President of the Student Union, Nir Dror; and Holocaust survivor Prof. Shevah Weiss, Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset.

High school students at TAU’s Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Technical College presented their final projects at a series of sessions held over a period of five days. Guests at the opening session included Oded Messer, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Meyerhoff Technical College; TAU Rector Dan Amir; Prof. Gideon Langholz, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Meyerhoff Technical College; TAU’s Dean for Research and Development, Prof. Emanuel Marom; and Rafi Aravot, Director-General of Eshed-Robotech.

One hundred and seventy companies (103 of which are technical or high-tech companies) participated in the annual Job Fair organized by the office of the Dean of Students.

Negotiations to end the strike of the Junior Academic Staff of four universities (including TAU) have failed. The Senior Academic Staff at TAU and the New Student Union have declared a one-day warning strike.

The TAU Senate approved the establishment of the Peres Institute for Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation.

The TAU Senate elected Prof. Aharon Kleiman the incumbent of the Nahum Goldmann Chair in Diplomacy, replacing Prof. David Vital who has retired.

The TAU Student Union held the annual Students Day celebrations.

The TAU Senate approved the establishment of the Gildor Chair for the Investigation of Growth Factors. The incumbent is Prof. Illana Gozes of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine.

CONFERENCES

TAU’s School of History, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities, together with the Yitzhak Rabin Center for Israel Studies held an international conference entitled "Six Days-Thirty Years." Addresses at the opening ceremony, chaired by Prof. Anita Shapira, were delivered by Itzhak Mordechai, Minister of Defense; Rector-elect Prof. Nili Cohen; Dean of Humanities, Prof. Marcelo Dascal; and Mrs. Dalia Rabin-Pelossof.

The Institute for Research of the Jewish Press held a conference honoring Shalom Rosenfeld, the Institute’s founder and first director, on his retirement from office. The conference was chaired by President Prof. Dinstein and greetings were delivered by Rector Dan Amir; Rector-elect Prof. Nili Cohen; Prof. Michael Keren, the newly-appointed Director of the Institute; and journalist Tommy Lapid. Prof. Benjamin Harshav of Yale University delivered a lecture entitled "The Projection of Public Reality in Journalism and Literature."

Dr. Ronald W. Zweig of TAU’s Department of Jewish History, Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities, and Dr. Avi Beker, Executive Director of the World Jewish Congress, delivered talks at the Ruta and Felix Zandman Annual Lecture in Memory of Moshe Shamir, entitled "Reclaiming Jewish Property - Past and Present," chaired by Dr. Dina Porat, Head of the Project for the Study of Anti-Semitism.

Dr. Myron Weinreb delivered a lecture entitled "The Quest for Treatment of Osteoporosis" at the inauguration ceremonies of the Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger Laboratories of Microbiology; the Sam and Rita Brodie Fund for Clinical and Research Equipment; and the Diane and Malcolm M. Rosenberg Bone and Molecular Biology Laboratories, all at the Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine.

The annual lecture in memory of Sheila Carmel was delivered by Prof. James Shapiro of Columbia University, entitled "Imagining Jews in Shakespeare's England."

TAU and the TAU-affiliated Sourasky Medical Center held the Covaldo Symposium, "Advances in Alzheimer and Parkinson's Diseases," organized by Prof. Amos Korczyn, the TAU Sieratzki Professor of Neurology, and Dr. Therese A. Treves, director of the Memory Disorders Clinic.

A ceremony marking the integration of the Felsenstein Medical Research Center (FMRC) in to TAU was held at the Rabin Medical Center, chaired by FMRC director Prof. Yossi Mekori. Addresses were delivered by Alan Fenton, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of FMRC; TAU President Professor Yoram Dinstein; Dr. Itzhak Peterburg, director-general of Kupat Holim Clalit; and Dean of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Elieser Kaplinsky. Prof. Jonathan Gershoni of the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences delivered a lecture entitled "AIDS: Approaching the Year 2000."

TAU’s Morris E. Curiel Center for International Studies held a conference entitled "The Future of an Idea: The Duty of Intervention,” organized by Prof. Eli Barnavi, and held under the auspices of the French Embassy.

An international conference entitled "Israeli Legal History," marking the jubilee year of the State of Israel, was held at TAU in cooperation with the University of Haifa and Yad Ben-Zvi.

The inaugural ceremony of the Poznanski-Mozelsio Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences was held with a lecture by Dr. Rachel Ehrlich, entitled "Tumor Escape from the Immune System."

Dr. Fritz Melchers of the Basel Institute for Immunology delivered the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences' Otto Herz Memorial Lectureship in Cancer Research.

Prof. Gideon Langholz of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering and Prof. Abraham Kendell of the University of South Florida delivered lectures at the recent meeting of the Faculty of Engineering Graduate Club, SHILUVIM, entitled "Fuzzy Logic and Engineering Applications."

An international conference entitled "The Nile - Civilization, History, Myths" organized by Prof. Haggai Erlich of the Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities was held at TAU under the auspices of Ormat Industries Ltd; the Ministry of Science; the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute; and Ben-Gurion University.

TAU’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Gershon. H. Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, held a memorial evening for Prof. Jonathan Shapira, the Department’s founder.

The 22nd conference of the Chair of the History and Culture of the Jews of Salonika and Greece was dedicated to a discussion on Meir Zvi Bnaya's book, Moshe Almosnino of Salonica, chaired by Prof. Minna Rozen, Head of TAU’s Diaspora Research Institute.

Prof. Arne Holmgren, Director of the Medical Nobel Institute for Biochemistry, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, was guest lecturer of TAU’s Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies.

TAU’s Faculty of Management--Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration hosted Gregory Root, President of Thomson Bankwatch, at the 20th conference on the Israeli Banking System.

H.E. Pedro Paulo Pinto Assumpacao, Ambassador of Brazil to Israel, was the guest of the International Forum, a joint program of the English Speaking Chapter of the Israel Friends of TAU and the Department of Political Science, Gershon H. Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences.

The inauguration ceremony of the Ephraim Katzir Biotechnology Club, located in the Jack Green Building of the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences, was held in the presence of Dean Prof. Isaac Barash; President Professor Yoram Dinstein; Rector Prof. Dan Amir; and Prof. Yair Aharonowitz, Head of the Laura Schwarz-Kipp Institute of Biotechnology. Eng. Wolf Blumenthal of Argentina, Vice Chairman of TAU’s Board of Governors, delivered an address in the name of the donors. A symposium entitled "From Molecules to Mankind, Science in the Tradition of Ephraim Katzir" was held to celebrate the inauguration. Designer of the Club room is Orly Rauch of the Moshe Zur Office, architects of the Jack Green Building.

The TAU School of Chemistry, Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, held a symposium entitled Challenges in Fundamental and Experimental Crystallography, honoring Prof. Uri Shmueli.

"Diplomacy in Struggle, 1945-1948" was the title of a symposium held by the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities, to mark the publication of the political documents of the Jewish Agency.

The Adler Research Center for Child Welfare and Protection held a conference entitled "Children at Risk."

The Elite Sports Center inaugurated a Fitness Room in memory of Isaac Izio Goldreich. Establishment of the Goldreich Fitness and Health Center was announced. Addresses were delivered by Arie Rosenzweig, the Center’s director, and Uri Afek, Chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors.

The Elite Sports Center held swimming events in honor of Anne and the late David Warsaw. Addresses were delivered by Prof. Danny Leviatan, Chairman of the University’s Sports Committee, and James Warsaw.

Prof. Blanche Gelfant of Dartmouth College, USA, delivered a lecture entitled "Assumptions of the Possessive Self: Gender, Jewishness, and Americanization" at the annual award ceremony in memory of Nadav Vardi of the English Department, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of the Humanities.

The Third Dr. Baruch Teichman Lecture was delivered by Dr. Peter Libby, Director of the Vascular Medicine and Atherosclerosis Unit, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, entitled "Molecular Mechanisms of the Acute Coronary Syndromes."

Prof. Fred Halliday of the London School of Economics and Political Science delivered the annual Georges A. Kaller Lecture of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies.

Prof. Ephraim Katzir delivered the annual Shimon Sirkin Memorial Lecture, entitled "Peace and National Security," chaired by Prof. Zeev Maoz, the Director of TAU’s Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies.

Prof. Henry Don Isaac Abarbanel, Director of the Institute for Nonlinear Science, University of California, San Diego, delivered the annual lecture in memory of Prof. Yossef Dothan, entitled "Private and Public Knowledge about Chaos." Prof. Abarbanel presented the Emilio Segre Distinguished Lectures in Physics of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation.

TAU’s Buchmann Faculty of Law held its annual moot trial in memory of faculty students and graduates who fell in Israel's wars. The trial, organized by the Faculty’s Associate Dean Prof. Menachem Mautner, was entitled "The Lawyer's Social Mission.”

The Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, held a special seminar hosting 1995 Nobel Prize laureate and TAU Honorary Doctor Prof. Paul Crutzen of the Max Planck Institute, Mainz, Germany, who delivered a lecture entitled "The Ozone Hole: A Man-Caused Chemical Instability in the Stratosphere."

The Department of Hebrew Literature, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities, held a conference entitled "Urban Folklore - Research of People Culture on the Verge of the 20th Century."

The Institute for German History at TAU’s Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities held an international conference entitled "Mirroring Germany: Imagination, Representation, Memory."

An international conference entitled "Education and Politics of Latin-America in the 20th Century" was organized by the School of History, Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities; the Joseph Alkalay Fund for Latin-American Studies; and the Elias Sourasky Chair for Latin American Studies.

The Herczeg Institute for Aging and the Naftali Frenkel Fund for the Study of Shoah Survivors held a conference entitled "The Study of the Shoah: Remembrance, Coping and Culture."

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS

Chancellor Sir Leslie Porter and Chairman of the Executive Council Moshe Porath were reelected.

Oded Regev, Ariel Tankus and Mariano Schain, graduate students of the Department of Computer Sciences, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, were awarded the Celia and Marcos Maus Annual Prizes in Computer Sciences. Addresses were delivered by Prof. Amiram Yehudai and Dr. Ilana Ben Ami, Regional Vice Chairperson for Latin America and Spain.

The 1997 Professor Richard Stein Memorial Prize of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine's Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger Eye Research Institute was awarded to Prof. Efrat Kessler. A guest lecture was delivered by Prof. Peter A. Campochiaro of the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute, John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA.

Prof. Yakir Aharonov of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, incumbent of TAU’s Alex Maguy Glass Chair in Theoretical Physics, was awarded an honorary doctorate of the University of Bristol, UK.

Prof. Emeritus Zvi Yavetz received an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich and from Ben Gurion University of the Negev.

Benjamin D. Gaon, President and CEO of KOOR Industries, was the first recipient of the Max Perlman 1997 Award of Excellence in Global Business Management.

Prof. Shalom Abarbanel of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, was appointed Head of the Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute for Advanced Studies, replacing Prof. Yuval Ne'eman.

Dr. Simon Kagan of the Film and Television Department, Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of the Arts, was awarded the 1997 Canadian Government Award for his book and research on Robert Flaherty's film Nanook of the North - the Life of the Nuits at the Hudson Bay in Canada.

Prof. Lev Fishelson of TAU’s George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences was awarded "The Minister of the Environment Shield" of 1997.

Prof. Michael Keren of the Department of Political Science, Gershon H. Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, was appointed Director of the Institute for Research of the Jewish Press. He replaces Shalom Rosenfeld, founder of the Institute.

Prof. Gregory Poltyrev of TAU’s Department of Electrical Engineering-Systems, Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering, was awarded a special prize for his unique and important contributions to information theory research, by the Israeli Chapter of the IEEE Information Theory Society.

Haim Diamant, a doctoral student of the School of Physics and Astronomy, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, was awarded the 1997 annual prize in memory of Prof. Yossef Dothan.

Prof. Boris Rubinsky was appointed Senior Professor by Special Appointment to the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering.

Two student films of TAU’s Department of Film and Television, Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of the Arts, won prizes at the Potsdam Student Film Festival. Killer Babe by Raskin won the Festival Organizers Prize and Red Heart Queen by Ran Tal and Etgar Keret won Second Jury Prize.

VISITS

A delegation from the University of Toronto headed by Chancellor Rose Wolfe visited on campus.

A delegation of the Science and Research Committee of the Parliament of Nordrhein-Westfalian, Germany, headed by Ingrid Fitzek, visited on campus.
