Vice Rector Prof. Shimon Yankielowicz was elected by the TAU Senate as Rector of the University, replacing Prof. Nili Cohen, who has completed her term of office.

Dov Lautman was elected by the Board of Governors as Chairman of the Executive Council, replacing Moshe Porath. Dov Lautman is Director-General of Delta Galil Industries Ltd.

Raya Jaglom, President of the TAU Israeli Friends, was elected by the Board of Governors as Vice Chairperson of the Board.

THE 2001 BOARD OF GOVERNORS EVENTS

Plenary Sessions of the Board:

Opening session: Opening remarks were delivered by Michael Steinhardt, Chairman of the Board. Reports were presented at the opening plenary session by Moshe Porath, outgoing Chairman of the Executive Council; President Itamar Rabinovich; Rector Nili Cohen; and Chairman of the Student Union Lior Shtrassberg.

Panel discussion on "The Israeli-Arab Conflict: Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel?" - moderated by Prof. Itamar Rabinovich. Panel participants included MK Prof. Moshe Arens, former Minister of Defense, and TAU's Prof. Shlomo Ben-Ami, MK and former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Isaac Kohlberg, CEO, TAU Economic Corporation, presented the newly established Corporation.

The Closing Plenary Session included the reports of the committees and election of the Chairman of the Executive Council, officers, and members of the Board. Remarks were delivered by Chairman Michael Steinhardt; President Rabinovich; outgoing Rector Nili Cohen; and Rector-elect Shimon Yankielowicz.

Honors:

A Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa was conferred upon:

Prizes:

The Dan David Prize was launched by President Itamar Rabinovich in the presence of Mr. Shimon Peres, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Dan David, the founder of the Prize.

The Dr. Jaime Constantiner Award in Jewish Education was inaugurated in the presence of the Constantiner family. The Prize recipient is Avraham Burg, Speaker of the Knesset. Dr. Arturo Constantiner responded in the name of the family.

The Hugo Ramniceanu Prize in Economics for 2001 was presented to Eli Hurvitz, President and CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd., in the presence of Mr. Hugo Ramniceanu, President of the French Friends, and TAU's Prof. Eli Bar-Navi, Ambassador of Israel to France.

The Minkoff Prize for Excellence in Law was awarded to Prof. Daniel Friedmann, Israel Prize laureate, incumbent of the Danielle Rubinstein Chair in Comparative Law. Greetings were delivered by Mr. Francis Minkoff.

The Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences was awarded in the presence of Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Beverly Sackler. Greetings were delivered by Chairman of the Sackler Prize Committee and former President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, TAU Prof. Joshua Jortner of the School of Chemistry. The Prize recipients are Prof. Moungi G. Bawendi, MIT; and Prof. James R. Heath, UCLA.

The President's Prize for Volunteer Students was awarded to Zvi Paz.

The Henry Glasberg Prize for Volunteer Students was awarded to Zofia Levi, Ziv Ferber, Valentin Nabel, Itamar Hamiel, and Yaniv Komemi.

The Celia and Marcos Maus Prizes in Computer Science were awarded to Marik Marshak and Ran Shaham, in the presence of Judith Cohen, representative of the Maus family, and Lilly Saltiel, President of the Mexican Friends.

The Marcel Adams Prize for Graduate Students in Neuroscience was awarded for the first time in the presence of Mr. Marcel Adams. Prize recipients are Shlomit Erlich, Tali Kimchi, Dan Frenkel, Rachel Zamostiano, Assaf Yaniv, Michal Ben-Shachar-Chechik, and Oded Fili.

The Deutsch Prize in Computer Science was awarded to Vladlen Kolton, in the presence of the Deutsch family. Mrs. Polly Deutsch, President of the Argentinean Friends, responded in the name of the family.

Chairs and Institutes:

The Marian Gertner Institute for Medical Nanosystems was inaugurated in the presence of Mrs. Hella Gertner, President of the Austrian Friends. Prof. Eli Kapon of TAU's Center for Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies delivered a lecture. Mrs. Gertner's son Alexander responded on behalf of the family.

The Yitzhak and Chaya Weinstein Research Institute for Signal Processing, donated by Prof. Ehud Weinstein of the TAU Fleischman Faculty of Engineering in the name of his parents, was inaugurated in the presence of the Weinstein family. TAU Honorary Doctor Prof. Alan Oppenheim of MIT delivered a lecture.

The Lilly and Alejandro Saltiel Chair in Corporate Leadership and Social Responsibility was inaugurated, in the presence of Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and the Saltiel family. Mr. Alejandro Saltiel responded on behalf of the family. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Dov Eden, incumbent of the Chair.

The David and Inez Myers Chair for Cancer Genetics and the David and Inez Myers Laboratory for Genetic Research were inaugurated in the presence of Mr. S. Lee Kohrman, President of the Myers Foundation. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Yosef Shiloh, incumbent of the Chair and the Director of the Laboratory.

Three new projects dedicated to Raymond and Beverly Sackler were inaugurated in their presence: The Program for Senior Professors by Special Appointment; a Chair in Exact Sciences; and a Chair for Career Development. Dr. Karen Avraham of the Department of Human Genetics at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine delivered a lecture on "The Human Genome Project - What's Next?"

Campus Development Projects:

The Eitan Berglas School of Economics Building was inaugurated together with the first meeting of the School's Alumni Association. Greetings were delivered by Dov Lautman, representative of the donors, and Shlomo Piotrkowsky, Chairman of the Alumni Association and Director of the First International Bank. Lectures were delivered by Prof. Kenneth J. Arrow, Nobel laureate in Economics, and Prof. Stanley Fischer, First Deputy Managing Director, International Monetary Fund. Concluding remarks were delivered by Prof. Zvi Eckstein, Head of the School.

The Pierre Wahl Floor in the Dan David Building was inaugurated in the presence of the Wahl and David families. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Gad Ariav, Head of the High-Tech Management School. The Wahl's son Francis and daughter Regine Krieger responded on behalf of the family.

The Cornerstone Laying of La Fondation Michel Kikoine was held in the presence of Mrs. Claire Maratier, daughter of the painter Kikoine of the School of Paris. A lecture was delivered by Dr. Dominique Levy-Eisenberg of the Department of Art History.

The Environmental Simulation Laboratory founded by the Charles Revson Foundation was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Eli N. Evans, Chairman of the Revson Foundation, and TAU President Rabinovich. Prof. Juval Portugali of the Department of Geography and Human Environment presented a 3D city map produced in the Laboratory.

The Aharon Yariv Wing was inaugurated in the presence of the Yariv family and donors. Speakers were President Itamar Rabinovich and Mrs. Nechama Yariv. Prof. Shai Feldman, Head of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, delivered a lecture entitled "Arale's Legacy."

The Claudia Caviezel-Birène Hall was inaugurated at the Faculty of Law, in the presence of the Birène family. A lecture was delivered by Dr. Jose Brunner of the Buchmann Faculty of Law. Mrs. Lyne Gelrubin and Mr. David Birène responded in the name of the family.

Robert Berks' Sculpture of George S. Wise at the George S. Wise Senate Building Plaza was unveiled. A lecture was delivered by Prof. Abel Schejter, former Dean of the George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences. Greetings were delivered Mrs. Ora Namir, former Minister of Labor and Welfare. Mrs. Naomi Sarlin and Mr. Norman Lipoff responded in the name of Mrs. Wise.

The sculpture "TAI CHI" by Varda Yoran was inaugurated in the presence of the Yoran family. Greetings were delivered by Prof. Mordechai Omer, Curator of the Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery. Mrs. Varda Yoran responded on behalf of the family. Daniel Fichman and students of the Elite Sports Center presented a Tai Chi demonstration.

The Stenzel Pool was inaugurated in the presence of Carol and Hans D. Stenzel and family. Opening remarks were delivered by Arie Rosenzweig, director of the Elite Sports Center. Greetings were delivered by TAU Vice President and Director-General Niv Ahituv and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Elite Sports Center Na'aman Gur. A synchronized swimming demonstration was held.

Funds for Graduate Students:

The Israel Pollak Fellowship Program for Excellence was inaugurated in the presence of Mrs. Rachel Pollak. Dean of the Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Moshe Semyonov, delivered a lecture entitled "The Foreign Workers - New Israelis?" Film director Dany Wolman screened an excerpt from his film Foreign Sister. Ms. Michelle Pollak responded on behalf of the family.

The Expansion of the Colton Scholarship Fund ceremony took place in the presence of Stewart and Judy Colton. Presentations were delivered by former Colton Scholarship recipients Prof. Daphne Barak-Erez, Vice Dean of the Buchmann Faculty of Law; Avishay Gal-Yam, a PhD student at the School of Physics and Astronomy; and Aviv Regev of the Department of Cell Research and Immunology. The Colton Fellows presented Mr. Colton with a map of North America made by the 19th century cartographer J. H. Colton as a present for his 60th birthday.

The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fellows program in the School of Government and Policy was inaugurated in the presence of Ms. Bonnie Boxer, the Israel representative of the Goldman Fund. A panel discussion on "Civil-Military Relations in Israel: Generals, Politicians and Civil Servants," moderated by Prof. Zeev Maoz, Head of the School, was held with the participation of Dalia Rabin-Pelossof, Deputy Minister of Defense; Prof. Yoav Peled, Department of Political Science; and Admiral (ret.) Avraham Ben-Shoshan.

The Alix de Rothschild Fund for Scholarships in Sciences and Technology was inaugurated in the presence of Rothschild Fund representative Dov Shalmon.

The Gabriela David Theater Production Fund was inaugurated with a lecture and performance moderated by Prof. Shimon Levi, Chairperson of the Department of Theater Arts, with selected readings from Tofte Aruch by Moshe Zacuto, performed by students. Mrs. Gabriela David responded on behalf of the David family.

Social Events:

Kabbalat Shabbat - dinner at homes of Israeli friends and faculty members.

Reception in honor of the recipients of honorary degrees, hosted by President Itamar Rabinovich and Dr. Efrat Rabinovich and Chairman of the Executive Council Moshe Porath and Mrs. Zila Porath.

Reception reviving the early years of the State, marking the opening of the Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors, hosted by Chairman of the Board Michael Steinhardt and Judy Steinhardt at the old port of Tel Aviv.

Spouses' program: "Tel Aviv in the Twenties - The Renaissance of the Hebrew Culture," a visit to Bialik House and the Gutman Museum with Prof. Ziva Shamir of the Department of Hebrew Literature, hosted by Dr. Efrat Rabinovich.

Farewell evening hosted by the TAU Student Union at the Ilana Goor Museum in Old Jaffa.

Tour of Apollonia-Arsuf: "An Ancient Site of a Coastal Town and Fortress" guided by Prof. Israel Roll, head of the TAU archaelogical expedition. TAU's Prof. Shimon Shamir and his wife Daniela hosted the participants for coffee at their home in Herzlia-on-Sea.

AROUND THE BOARD

Mr. Johannes Rau, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, flew in for the inauguration of the Ignaz Bubis Scholarship Fund for Jewish Studies. Participants included Minister of Foreign Affairs Shimon Peres; TAU President Itamar Rabinovich; Mrs. Ida Bubis; and daughter Neomi Bubis. The event was moderated by TAU Vice President Avi Primor. Dean of the Entin Faculty of Humanities Prof. Dan Laor delivered a lecture entitled "Agnon in Germany."

Israel Prize laureate Prof. Zvi Yavetz of the School of History delivered the Dan David Prize Inaugural Lecture on "History and Zeitgeist."

The Stanley Steyer Doctoral Fellowship Fund in Cancer Epidemiology was inaugurated in the presence of the Steyer family followed by a conference in honor of Prof. Baruch Modan, Head of the Stanley Steyer Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Research.

The Adler Prize for Child Welfare was awarded to Esther Lobochinsky and Dr. Anita Weiner of Yeladim, the Council for the Child in Placement, at the annual conference on "Childhood in the Line of Fire" of the Adler Research Center for Child Welfare and Protection. A certificate of recognition was awarded to Dr. Muhammad M. Hai-Yahia of the Hebrew University.

The Sergio Grywac Prize for Jewish-Arab Relations in the State of Israel for the year 2001 was awarded in the presence of Eduardo Wurzmann, representative of the family. The Prize recipient is Tamar Lavi.

The Max Perlman Award for Excellence in Global Business Management was awarded in the presence of the Perlman family. The Prize recipient is Itsik Danziger, President of Comverse Technology.

The Louise and Dr. Nahum Barag Annual Lecture in Rhetoric and Culture in Modern France was delivered by Prof. Marc Ferro of the Centre de recherches historiques, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, in the presence of Ambassador of Israel to France, Prof. Eli Bar-Navi of TAU.

The Yehuda Eisenberg Memorial Lecture was delivered by TAU Honorary Doctor Prof. Sidney D. Drell of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), on "The Responsibility of Scientists."

Scholarships of the Yoran-Sznycer Fund in Jewish History were awarded.

The Porter School of Environmental Studies in cooperation with the Israel Union for Environmental Defense held a conference entitled "Water and Land Pollution in the Dan Region: Scientific, Legal and Planning Issues." Opening remarks were delivered by Dame Shirley Porter and Prof. Zev Levin, Head of the Porter School. The closing discussion was moderated by Dr. Arie Nesher, Professional Director of the Porter School.

The annual conference of the Manna Institute for Plant Biosciences was held, entitled "Plant Biotechnology, Its Benefits versus Its Risks." A lecture was delivered by Prof. Roger N. Beachy, President of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and recipient of the Wolf Prize for Agriculture 2001. The Conference was organized by Prof. Baruch Epel, Director of the Institute. Greetings at the opening session were delivered by Dean Eliora Ron and Rector Shimon Yankielowicz.

"Beyond the Ivory Tower: The Role of the Economist" was the title of the Hugo Ramniceanu Economic Forum, with the participation of Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Kenneth Arrow, Prof. Stanley Fischer, and Prof. Daniel Cohen of Delta, University of Paris I.

The exhibition "Mario Botta: Designing a Synagogue - The Cymbalista Jewish Heritage Center" has opened at Beth Hatefutsoth, the Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora.

The exhibition "A Match Made in Heaven" was held at the Laura Schwarz-Kipp Rotunda in the George S. Wise Senate Building.

"An Afternoon with Robert Pinsky," Poet Laureate of the US (1997-2001), was the title of the Annual Lecture in Memory of Sheila Carmel. Greetings were delivered by Dame Shirley Porter.

CONFERENCES

"The State of the Nation" was the title of the annual symposium in memory of Aharon Yariv, founder and first Head of TAU's Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies. Opening remarks were delivered by TAU President Itamar Rabinovich and Prof. Shai Feldman, Head of the Center. Among the participants were General Moshe Yaalon, Deputy Chief of Staff; Prof. Haim Harari, President of the Weizmann Institute of Science; MK Moshe Arens, former Minister of Defense; MK Prof. Shlomo Ben-Ami, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Minister of Internal Security; MK Avraham Shohat, former Minister of Finance; and Justice Dorit Beinish of the Supreme Court.

Prof. Alvero Siza, the Wolf Prize recipient of 2001 in Architecture, delivered a lecture entitled "Works"

"Other Sex" was the title of the first conference of the Forum for Homosexual-Lesbian Studies. Keynote lecture: Prof. Mandy Merck, Royal Holloway College, University of London, on "Sexuality, Subjectivity and ... Economics?"

The Ed and Herb Stein Chair in Oral Pathology of the Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine held a symposium on Dry Mouth, presented by Prof. Leo Sreebny of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Dr. Philip Fox of Amarillo Biosciences Inc., USA, organized by chair incumbent Prof. Amos Buchner.

The Morris E. Curiel Center for International Studies and the Israel-European Union Forum, in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, hosted Prof. Georg Kreis, University of Basel, who lectured on "The Swiss Policy towards Europe - A Model for Israel?" Opening remarks were delivered by TAU Vice President Avi Primor.

Dr. Edmund Stoiber, Prime Minister of Bavaria, delivered a lecture entitled "The Future of Europe in the Global Village." Opening remarks: Vice President Avi Primor. An agreement for application of technologies developed at TAU was signed between the international group Giesecke & Devrient GmbH, Munich, by Jurgen K. Nehls, member of the Executive Council of G&D, and President Itamar Rabinovich on behalf of TAU's Ramot, in the presence of Prime Minister Stoiber.

The Herczeg Institute on Aging held a conference on "The Yearning of Man for Immortality." Opening remarks: Prof. Haim Hazan, Head of the Institute.

The Department of English held the annual award ceremony in memory of Nadav Vardi. Dean of the Entin Faculty of Humanities Dan Laor delivered a lecture entitled "Prodigal Sons: Desertion and Reconciliation in Contemporary Israeli Writings."

The Entin Faculty of Humanities, Unit for Foreign Languages, and Embassy of Portugal opened an exhibition at the Sourasky Central Library, on Azulejo Art in Portugal. Greetings at the opening ceremony: Jose Filipe de Moraes Cabrel, Ambassador of Portugal to Israel, and Carmen Fedor, Head of the Unit. Dr. Sonia Mucznik of the Department of Art History delivered a lecture entitled "Portuguese Ajulejos - Art and Decoration."

"Like an Egyptian Movie" was the title of a conference of the Entin Faculty of Humanities marking the publication of a novel carrying the same title by Prof. Ron Barkai of the School of History. Attending were friends and colleagues Prof. Shulamith Shahar, Prof. Alisa Meyuhas-Ginio, Prof. Sasson Somekh, Dr. Yehudit Ronen, and author Hanoch Bar-Tov. Moderator of the conference was Dr. Moshe Zuckermann, Head of the Institute for German History.

The awarding ceremony of the Inbar Attia and Tali Gordon Scholarships was held by the Entin Faculty of Humanities, the Gershon Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences, and the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Center for Media of the Jewish People. The ceremony was chaired by Prof. Michael Keren, Director of the Bronfman Center. Addresses were delivered by Dean of the Gordon Faculty Moshe Semyonov and Dean of the Entin Faculty Dan Laor.

"Ethiopia - Christianity, Judaism, Islam" was the title of a conference held by the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies together with the Open University. Greetings were delivered by TAU's Prof. Hagai Erlich and Ambassador of Ethiopia to Israel Girma Amara.

The International Forum of the TAU English Speaking Friends and the Department of Political Science hosted Dr. Valeria Mariana Stoica, Ambassador of Romania to Israel, who lectured on "The Road to European Union Accession - The Case of Romania." Moderator: Dr. Gad Barzilai.

Two hundred and fifty companies participated in the annual Employment Fair organized by the Dean of Students Office. Sixteen thousand students attended the fair.

The 11th annual meeting of the European Neuropeptides Club (ENC) and the American Summer Neuropeptides Conference was held at TAU, organized by Prof. Illana Gozes of the Sackler School of Medicine.

Prof. Sandra McGee Deutsch of the University of Texas, El Paso, delivered a lecture on "A Weighty Legacy: Extreme Right-Wing Nationalism in Argentina, Brazil and Chile during the 1930s and After," as a guest of the School of History. The event was moderated by Prof. Raanan Rein, Head of the Institute of the History and Culture of Latin America.

Dr. Robert Satloff delivered the annual Jimmy Carter Lecture of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, entitled "The Bush Administration and the Middle East: Lessons from the Past, Options for the Future."

"The Mordechai Affair - A Case Study" was a title of a conference of the Hotline for Information and Support for Sexual Harassment Victims at TAU. (Itzhak Mordechai, MK, is former Minister of Defense.)

The Department of Theater hosted the dramatist Sir David Hare, Honorary Doctor of TAU, to a meeting with students.

The Minerva Center for Human Rights held an international conference on Social Rights, in cooperation with the Alain Poher Chair in Labor Law and the Buchmann Faculty of Law. The conference was organized by Prof. Daphne Barak-Erez, Associate Dean and outgoing Director of the Minerva Center; Dr. Aeyal Gross; and Dr. Guy Mundlak.

The Buchmann Faculty of Law held a conference on Jurisprudence and Social Justice, organized by advocate Anat Ben-Dor.

The Environmental Simulation Laboratory at the Porter School of Environmental Studies founded by the Charles Revson Foundation held the second meeting on "Democratization of Planning in Israel: The Jewish-Arab Relationship." The event was organized by Prof. Juval Portugali, Head of the Laboratory.

The Mediterranean Civilizations Project held an international workshop on "Mediterranean Paradigms and the Study of Antiquity," organized by Prof. Irad Malkin.

The Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies held an international symposium entitled "The New Media in the Middle East: State and Society in a Contested Arena," organized by Dr. Joshua Teitelbaum.

The Women Studies Forum with the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), USA, hosted Prof. Riv-Ellen Prell of Women's Studies and Jewish Studies, University of Minnesota. Her lecture was entitled "Jewish Men and Women in Conflict: Representations of American Jewish Anxiety and Desires."

The School of Physics and Astronomy, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, held a memorial lecture for Prof. Yossef Dothan, moderated by Prof. Marek Karliner. A lecture was delivered by Prof. William J. Willis of Columbia University on "Electrons in Cryogenic Liquids: Science and Applications." The recipients of the "Academic Achievement" scholarship of the Dothan Fund and the Israel Phoenix Assurance Company were doctoral students Amit Loewy and Yaron Kinar.

The Institute of the History and Culture of Latin America, in cooperation with the Embassy of Argentina, hosted the author Mempo Giardinelli, who delivered a lecture on "Literature and Democracy," moderated by Prof. Ra'anan Rein, Head of the Institute. Greetings were delivered by Gregorio Dupont, Ambassador of Argentina in Israel.

The Fleischman Faculty of Engineering hosted the first exhibition of the 120 best projects in electronics of vocational high schools in Israel, organized by the Ministry of Education, the TAU Faculty of Engineering, and Intel Israel. The student who won the Best Project Prize will receive a full scholarship from the Faculty, if accepted to the Electrical and Electronics Department at TAU.

The TAU Institute of German History, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Goethe Institute held a conference entitled "Deutsche Leitkultur - What Is It?" moderated by Dr. Moshe Zuckermann, Head of the TAU Institute. Ambassador of Germany to Israel Rudolf Dressler delivered greetings.

The Unit for Science Oriented Youth of TAU's School of Education sponsored a youth virtual campus in Spanish and Hebrew entitled "Tikun Leil Shavuot," bringing together Jewish youngsters from Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina and Madrid with Israeli youth in solving virtual tasks based on a variety of scientific areas of research.

The Department of Jewish History at the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies held an international conference entitled "Judah and Judeans in the Neo-Babylonian Period." Greetings at the opening session, chaired by Head of the School Prof. Yair Hoffman, were delivered by Dean of the Entin Faculty of Humanities Prof. Dan Laor.

"Hebrew Literature and the Bible: Cultural Inheritance and Artistic Revolutions" was the title of a three-day inter-university conference for the study of Hebrew literature, hosted by the TAU Department of Hebrew Literature. Greetings at the opening session, chaired by Head of the Department Prof. Eli Yassif, were delivered by Rector Prof. Nili Cohen and Faculty Dean Prof. Dan Laor. Two festive evenings were held: "Hebrew Poets Read and Discuss Poetry and the Bible," moderated by Prof. Menakhem Perry of the Department of Literature, and "Authors Discuss the Bible, Literature and Reality," moderated by Prof. Nissim Kalderon of the Department of Film and Television.

The first guest lecture of the Program of Religion Studies was delivered by Prof. David Frankfurter of the University of New Hampshire on "The World of Erotic Magic in Coptic Egypt," organized by the Porter School of Cultural Studies.

The 25th conference of the Chair for the History and Culture of the Jews of Salonika and Greece was held at the Cymbalista Synagogue and Jewish Heritage Center. Greetings were delivered by Head of the Center Prof. Aron Dotan and Head of the Diaspora Research Institute Aharon Oppenheimer. Prof. Alisa Meyuhas-Ginio, incumbent of the Chair, delivered the 2000 report. Fifth President of the State of Israel Yitzhak Navon delivered a lecture on "H. M. Bialik and Sephardic Jewry" and Dr. Shemuel Refael of Bar-Ilan University spoke on "Translation of Bialik's Work into Ladino in Salonika's Jewish Daily Press."

Prof. David W. Golde, Physician in Chief, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, was guest lecturer of the Saul J. Farber Distinguished Lectures in Medicine, endowed by the Sackler Foundation, on "Cancer Care in the 21st Century." Coordinator of the event was Prof. Uri Liberman.

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS

Prof. Chaim Ganz was appointed Director of the Minerva Center for Human Rights, replacing Prof. Daphne Barak-Erez.

Prof. John Glucker of the Department of Classics was awarded a Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa of the National Capodistrian University of Athens, at a special ceremony held in Athens.
