IN ISRAEL

The school year began on October 29, with about 26,000 students.
New first degree programs:
BSc in Life Sciences and Medicine
Mathematics together with any two of the following: Economics, Philosophy and Psychology.
Biology and Psychology with emphasis on Brain Sciences.
BSc in Computer Sciences and Biology with specialization in Bioinformatics.
MFA in Film and Television.
Educational Counseling of the Young.
Microbiology Laboratories Studies.

All TAU faculties will offer virtual courses. The course site will enable the addition of visual material, bibliographies, schedules, interaction, evaluation, grades, student works, tests etc. The site address is: http://virtual.tau.ac.il

A new train station was inaugurated near the University campus. 160 trains per day will now stop at this station.

CONFERENCES

The School of Physics and Astronomy held the annual conference in memory of Prof. Dror Sadeh. Dr. Jonathan Sadeh delivered an address on behalf of the family. Prof. Michael Belkin, Head of the Ophthalmic Technologies Laboratory at TAU's Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger Eye Research Institute delivered a lecture entitled "Eye Laser: Treatment and Weapon." A scholarship in the name of Dror Sadeh was awarded to Zvika Shinar for his master thesis project entitled "Sleep Staging and Sleep Disorders Diagnosis from ECG Analysis."

Prof. George Papanicolaou of the Department of Mathematics at Stanford University held a colloquium at the Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies, entitled "Variational Principles for Convection, Diffusion and Flow, and Applications." Director of the Institute is Prof. Saul Abarbanel.

Yitzhak Goren, Director-General of the Ministry of Environment was guest lecturer at the scholarship awarding ceremony of the Rieger-JNF Foundation (Rieger-Jewish National Fund Program for Environmental Studies). Greetings were delivered by Vice Rector Shimon Yankielowicz. The American Foundation awarded 27scholarships in environmental studies to Israeli graduate students from all Israeli universities. The event was coordinated by Prof. Marshall P. Tulin of the University of California, Santa Barbara and Prof. Touvia Miloh, Associate Dean at TAU's Fleischman Faculty of Engineering.

An exhibition of works by Ehud Lehrer entitled "Works in Iron, Wood and Concrete" has opened at the Sourasky Central Library.

TAU's George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences celebrated the 90th birthday of Prof. Heinrich Mendelssohn, Israel's senior zoologist and one of the founding fathers of the University. Among the guest speakers were Shimon Peres, Minister of Environmental Development, TAU Rector Nili Cohen and Faculty Dean Eliora Ron.

TAU's "Animal and Society" project held its fifth conference. Opening remarks were delivered by MK Yossi Sarid and Vice Rector Shimon Yankielowicz.

TAU President Itamar Rabinovich and Mrs. Rabinovich held a reception celebrating the 80th birthday of TAU Chancellor Sir Leslie Porter. Brigadier-General Dr. Shimon Nave and Gad Proper, Managing-Director of Osem International Ltd., spoke on two chapters in Sir Leslie's life.

General Yitzhak Ben-Israel, Director of the Technology Warfare Development Division at the Ministry of Defense was the guest lecturer at the Haim Avital Memorial Annual Symposium. He spoke on "The Era of Information and the National Security." Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Niv Ahituv, TAU Vice President and Director-General.

TAU's Department of Theater was invited by the national theater Habima to perform the student play Missing God directed by Nola Chelton.

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS.

Dr. Yoav Horn of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine was awarded the World Health Organization's Sasakawa Health Prize for 2000 for his innovative work in health development. Dr. Horn received the award for his work over 30 years in the field of cancer research and treatment in Israel and in the West Bank, where he set up an oncology program.

Prof. Raymond L. Boxman of TAU's Fleischman Faculty of Engineering was awarded the 2000 Dyke Award, at the XIX International Symposium on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum held in Xian, China. Prof. Boxman received the award for his outstanding work in the field of electrical discharges in vacuum, in particular for his contribution to the physics, technology, and applications of vacuum arc plasmas.

Prof. Haim Wolfson of TAU's School of Computer Sciences was awarded the Juludan Prize for his work on "Algorithms for Protein Structural Comparison and Computer Assisted Drug Design." The Prize was established by Daniel Falkner and his colleagues from London.

ABROAD

165 Board members and Friends from 17 countries participated in the International Convention "Sefarad 2000" held in Madrid, Granada and Seville, under the auspices of TAU's Morris E. Curiel Center for International Studies and the Foundation of the Three Cultures of the Mediterranean.

The King of Spain, Juan Carlos invited a delegation of officers from TAU to an audience at Real Palace in Madrid.

Academic events in Madrid commenced with a lecture entitled "The Dialogue Between Modern Spanish and Israeli Art" by Prof. Mordechai Omer, Director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and Curator of TAU's Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery. The lecture was held at the Reina Sofia Museum and National Art Center, and was chaired by Adv. Moshe Porath, Chairman of the TAU Executive Council. Opening remarks were delivered by Juan Manuel Bonet, Director of the Museum.

In Granada, Prof. Jose Ramon Ayaso of the University of Granada delivered a lecture entitled "Granada and its Place in History." The event was chaired by TAU Rector Nili Cohen.

In Seville, the Tenth Encounter of the Three Cultures: Judaism, Christianity and Islam entitled "Great Issues of the 21st Century, took place. The event was coordinated by Ambassador Shmuel Hadas, first Ambassador to Spain. Greetings were delivered by Manuel Chaves Gonzales, President of the Government of Andalusia and Ambassador Herzl Inbar. The opening lecture was delivered by Prof. Rabinovich and Prof. Martin Kramer, Director of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, entitled "Tour d'Horizon of the Mediterranean at the Beginning of the 21st Century." Additional sessions were "Security in the Mediterranean," chaired by journalist Dario Valcarcel, Director of Politica Exterior, Spain; "Culture" chaired by Prof. Manuel Gala, Rector of Alcala de Henares University, Spain, and "Society and Economy" chaired by Dr. Rachid Benmokhtar Benabdellah, President of Al Akhawayn University, Morocco.

An official reception was held by the Mayor of Madrid, Jose Maria Alvarez del Manzano y Lopez del Hierro. Nobel Prize Laureate of Literature and Honorary Doctor of TAU, Camilo Jose Cela, Marquis of Iria Flavia, gave an address. Greetings were delivered by Benno Gitter, outgoing Chairman of the Board and TAU Rector Nili Cohen.

Social Events in Madrid: A reception was hosted by President of the Spanish Friends Henri Misrahi and Astrid Misrahi, who greeted the participants together with Sir Leslie Porter and Ambassador of Israel to Spain, Herzl Inbar. TAU Governor Mrs. Heide Wolf hosted the participants at her home. Greetings were delivered by Isaac Querub, President of the Jewish Community of Madrid, Prof. Rabinovich and Dr. Ilana Ben Ami, Vice President for Latin America and Spain, and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee .

In Granada TAU President Itamar Rabinovich and Dr. Efrat Rabinovich together with Abe G. and Ruth Fromcenko hosted a dinner and flamenco show at the Alhambra Palace Hotel. The TAU Friends in Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela hosted a lunch.

In Seville the American Friends of TAU hosted the participants for dinner.
Morris E. Curiel sponsored the farewell dinner, during which the transfer of the chairmanship of the TAU Board of Governors from the outgoing Chairman Benno Gitter to Michael Steinhardt took place .
