IN ISRAEL

The George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences and the School of Mathematical Sciences, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences, are opening a new undergraduate program in Bioinformatics. The coordinators of the program are Prof. Ron Shamir of Mathematics and Prof. Bernard Epel of Life Sciences.

TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Bezeqcall Communications have established a distance learning project in continuing education for hospital physicians. The project, the first of its kind in Israel, will be operated by satellite via high-speed internet.

CONFERENCES

The Australian Federal Minister of Education Dr. David Kemp visited TAU and met with TAU President Itamar Rabinovich, Dean of Engineering Gideon Langholz, and Vice President Yehiel Ben-Zvi. Dr Kemp was accompanied by the Australian Ambassador to Israel Dr. Richard Rigby and representatives from the government, academic and private sectors in Australia. Dr. Kemp met with Australian students of the Lowy School for Overseas Students.

Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Gov. George W. Bush Prof. Condoleezza Rice, Hoover Senior Fellow and Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, delivered the Margaret Thatcher Annual Lecture, entitled "Challenges for American Foreign Policy in the 21st Century." Opening remarks were delivered by President Itamar Rabinovich.

The Faculty of Management - The Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration held its sixth annual conference on "Accounting and Finance in Tel Aviv," under the auspices of the Rich Foundation, Switzerland, and the Faculty's endowed chairs. Organizers of the conference were Prof. Simon Benninga and Prof. Eli Amir.

The School of Continuing Medical Education at TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine awarded certificates to graduates of the 34th international postgraduate training program in medicine. Greetings at the ceremony were delivered by Vice Dean Prof. Moshe Phillip and Program coordinator Dr. Ron Maymon. Dr. Pushpa Kalia of India replied on behalf of the training physicians. TAU's Vice President Avi Primor delivered a lecture entitled "Israel's Policy on International Cooperation."

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS

Prof. Noga Alon, Head of TAU's School of Mathematical Sciences, was awarded the 2000 Polya Prize by SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) for his contribution of the use of algebraic methods in combinatorics and computer sciences.

Prof. Emeritus Margalith Galun of the Wise Faculty of Life Sciences was awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award of the International Symbiotic Society (ISS).

VISITS

Arie Kapun, Director-General of the Tel Aviv Municipality, visited TAU. He met with Vice President and Director-General Niv Ahituv and Deputy Director-General for Engineering and Maintenance Ofer Lugasi, and he visited the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering.

OBITUARIES

TAU mourns the passing away of former US Secretary of the Treasury Mr. William E. Simon, Honorary Member of the BOG and Honorary Doctor of TAU in 1976.

TAU mourns the passing away of Mr. Arie Carasso, Israel, Honorary Member of the BOG and founder of "Gan Daphna," the tropical conservatory at the TAU Botanical Gardens.

TAU mourns the passing away of Mrs. Maritza Pionkowski, Venezuela, Member of the BOG and TAU Honorary Fellow.

COMING EVENTS

The International Convention "Sefarad 2000" will take place in Madrid, Granada and Seville on 22-26 October, 2000. Registration is closed.

The 10th European Regional Conference of the TAU Board of Governors will take place at the Carlton Hotel, St. Moritz, Switzerland from 25-29 January 2001. The program will feature Thomas Friedman of the NewYork Times; Prof. Eli Kapon (nanosciences); Prof. Yosef Shiloh of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine (genetics and molecular biology); musicologist Dr. Astrith Baltsan; newly-elected Chairman of the BOG Michael Steinhardt; President Itamar Rabinovich; Rector Nili Cohen; and Honorary Chairman of the BOG Benno Gitter.
