IN ISRAEL

The TAU Senate approved the upgrading of the Department of Computer Sciences at the School of Mathematical Sciences to the School of Computer Sciences at the Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences.

The Azrieli School of Architecture published its first magazine, 6b, edited by architect Orit Siman-Tov Pinhas.

The TAU Senate approved the establishment of the Levy Edersheim Institute for Functional Brain Imaging.

Prof. Zvi Ben-Avraham of the Department of Geophysics and Planetary Studies was elected a member of the Israeli National Academy of Sciences.

CONFERENCES

170 men and women, the largest contingent ever, were presented with PhD certificates. President Itamar Rabinovich and Rector Nili Cohen attended the ceremony and Prof. Shraga Shechter delivered the keynote address.

The Azrieli School of Architecture held an end of year exhibition of student works at the Mexico Building of the Katz Faculty of Arts. Greetings at the opening ceremony were delivered by Mayor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa Ron Huldai.

The Zackham Scholarship of the Buchmann Faculty of Law was awarded to Dr. Leora Bilsky, who gave a lecture at the ceremony entitled "The Kastner Trial and Collective Memory." The ceremony was moderated by the Dean of Law, Prof. Menachem Mautner. The School of Chemistry held a Week of Electrochemistry in honor of Prof. Eliezer Gileadi. Sessions included the Third Electrochemical Symposium of the Israel Section of the Electrochemical Society and a panel discussion entitled "Open Questions in Interfacial Electrochemistry and Energy Conversion." Prof. Costas G. Vayenas of the University of Patras, Greece, delivered a lecture entitled "High Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells."

Winners of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition in Israel are Yaron Izik, Eli Anuka and Gadi Erez of Boyer High School, Jerusalem. The competition was held under the auspices of TAU's Fleischman Faculty of Engineering and supported by the Manuel and Raquel Klachky Chair in Subsurface Hydrology. The Prize winners will participate in the international competition in Stockholm which will take place in August 2000. Demitri Dvorkin, Yevgeni Kuznizov and Yelena Balan of the Bama'aleh Project for immigrant students (who arrived before their parents) at Ein Gedi High School are the recipients of the Klachky Prize for their research on recycling irrigation water. The awarding ceremony was chaired by Prof. Gideon Dagan, the Academic Director of the Competition.

The TAU Sackler Faculty of Medicine held the first meeting on "Magnesium in Biology and Medicine," which was moderated by Prof. Rafi Korenstein, Chairperson of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. An introductory review was presented by co-moderator Prof. Gustava Stendig-Lindberg of the Department. The Israeli Association for the Study of Magnesium in Biology and Medicine was established at the meeting.

The TAU School of History held the Aranne Lecture and Scholarship awarding ceremony. The lecture, entitled "Stabilization of the Middle Eastern State and the Israeli-Arab Peace Process," was delivered by Prof. Asher Susser of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies.

TAU's Interdisciplinary Center for Technological Analysis and Forecasting (ICTAF), in cooperation with the Pisa Consortium and the NTUA Research Center, Greece, held a conference entitled "Opportunities for Euro-Mediterranean Collaboration, the EUMEDIS Call, the ITN-Information Technologies Node."

Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to Governor George W. Bush, Prof. Condoleezza Rice, Hoover Senior Fellow and professor of political science at Stanford University, delivered the Margaret Thatcher Annual Lecture. It was entitled "Challenges for American Foreign Policy in the 21st Century." Opening remarks were delivered by President Itamar Rabinovich.

The Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery opened a new exhibition entitled "Space-Art Germany." Greetings were delivered by curator of the Gallery Prof. Mordechai Omer; Director of the Goethe Institute Dr. Hans Jurgen Nagel; and curator of the exhibition Dr. Ursula Zeller.

The Knesset Negev Day took place in TAU's Florence and George S. Wise Observatory in Mizpe Ramon. Among the participants at the meeting were Chairperson of the Knesset Committee for Science and Technology Anat Maor, Mayor of Mizpe Ramon Dror Dvash, and Dr. Noah Brosch of TAU.

Hot by Zohar Lavi, a student of the Department of Film and Television, Katz Faculty of Arts, won the Yaron Yerushalmi Short Film Contest at the International Student Film Festival. First prize in two categories went to the Department of Film and Television at the University of Marmara, Turkey, for the film Boran, and for Best School.

TAU's Department of Communication and the Missouri School of Journalism, under the auspices of BMS Israel, held a two-day workshop on Media in Medicine.

"The Economy of Turkey - Policy Performance and Outlook" was the title of a conference recently held with the participation of economists from Israel and Turkey. The conference was organized by the Demirel Program for Contemporary Turkish Studies at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies and the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Bilkent University, Ankara.

The School of Mathematical Sciences held the Mid-Term Conference of the European TMR Network at TAU on "Non Linear Parabolic Partial Differential Equations: Methods and Applications."

"Israel and Lebanon - End of an Era?" was the title of the conference held by the TAU-affiliated Israeli Association for Military History and the Department of Middle Eastern History. Among the speakers were General Amos Malka, Head of IDF Intelligence.

The Middle East-Mediterranean Scholar Athlete Games were held at TAU, organized by Arie Rosenzweig. Greetings at the opening ceremony were delivered by Matan Vilnai, Minister of Science, Culture and Sports, and Prof. Itamar Rabinovich. Three hundred students from Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Turkey, Cyprus, Ireland, the US, Canada, India and Israel took part in the sport and cultural activities.

Dr. Tamar Ross was awarded the Ariel Rosen-Zvi Prize, presented by Justice Meir Shamgar, former President of the Supreme Court.

The Cummings Center for Russian and East European Studies held a symposium entitled, "Israel-Russia Relations 1941-1953," upon publication of documents on Israeli-Soviet relations from 1941-1953.

The Buchmann Faculty of Law and the Cegla Institute for Comparative and Private International Law held an international conference entitled "Protecting Investors in a Global Economy."

The annual Moshe Haviv lecture was delivered by advocate Haim Zadok, former Minister of Justice, on "Is Israel a State of Law?" The event was chaired by Gad Yaakobi, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN. Concluding remarks were delivered by Zalman Shoval, former Israeli Ambassador to the US.

The Buchmann Faculty of Law, the Cegla Institute for Comparative and Private International Law, and the Minerva Center for Human Rights held an international conference entitled "Referenda and Direct Democracy: Moral and Legal Dilemmas," coordinated by Prof. Andrei Marmor.

The Department of English held the annual award ceremony in memory of Nadav Vardi. Shirley Kaufman delivered a lecture entitled "The Defiant Muse: Retrieving Women's Hebrew Voices."

TAU's Prof. Yael (Yuli) Tamir, Minister of Absorption, delivered a lecture entitled, "The Changing Israeli Society and Its Impact on the Educational System," at the end of year meeting of the School of Education's Alumni Association.

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS

Outgoing Chairman of the Board Benno Gitter was appointed Chairman of the newly established President's International Advisory Forum.

Architect Hilell Shoken of TAU's Azrieli School of Architecture is the curator of the Israeli delegation to the Architecture Biannalle in Venice.

Alon Barnea, Vice President for Business Development of "star*home," a Comverse Company, was elected Chairman of the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Club SHILUVIM.

The L'OREAL-Recanati Excellence Awards for Women in Management and Research were presented to Yael Ephron, Director-General of TAHAL, and Ronit Krak-Katz of the Hebrew University, in the presence of MK Limor Livnat, Chairperson of the Prize Committee, Mrs. Dominque Huntzinger, wife of the French Ambassador to Israel, and Gad Proper, CEO, L'OREAL Israel.

Dr. Noah Brosch was appointed Director of TAU's Florence and George S. Wise Observatory. He will assume office on September 1.

Prof. Malka Margalit was elected Head of the School of Education, replacing Prof. David Chen, who completed his term of office. She will assume office on October 1.

Mrs. Viviane Bollag has been appointed representative of TAU in Switzerland.

COMING EVENTS

The International Convention "Sefarad 2000" will take place in Madrid, Granada and Seville on October 22-26, 2000. Due to the high season in Spain, there are no more places available.

The 10th European Regional Meeting will be held in St. Moritz, Switzerland, from January 25-29, 2001.

The 2001 Annual Meeting of the BOG will take place from May 11-18, 2001.
