IN ISRAEL

The TAU Senate approved the establishment of the new Argentina Chair for Research in the Social Psychology of Conflict and Cooperation. The incumbent of the Chair is Prof. Arie Nadler.

The TAU Senate approved the establishment of the new Danielle Rubinstein Chair in Comparative Private Law. The incumbent is Prof. Daniel Friedmann.

CONFERENCES

The sixth Dror Sadeh Olympics in Astronomy and Space Research was held at TAU, moderated by Prof. Meir Meidav of TAU. Greetings were delivered by President Itamar Rabinovich. The event is organized by TAU's School of Education and the School of Physics and Astronomy under the auspices of the Ministry of Education.

"Violence in Israeli Society" was the title of a conference at TAU held under the auspices of Rector Nili Cohen. TAU's Prof. Shlomo Ben-Ami, Minister of Internal Security; Eli Yishai, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs; and Justice Meir Shamgar, former Supreme Court President, participated in a debate on: "Is It Possible to Tackle Violence?"

Prime Minister Ehud Barak delivered the keynote address at TAU's Steinmetz Center for Peace Research Grants and Student Awards Ceremony. Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Ephraim Yaar, Director of the Center, and TAU President Itamar Rabinovich.

Austria 2000 was the title of a conference of the Curiel Center for International Studies, organized by Prof. Gabriel Gorodetsky, the Director of the Center.

The TAU Sackler School of Medicine held a conference on Medicine and the Arts within the framework of a new clinical program, MPS (Medicine-Person-Society), aimed at involving first year medical students with clinical work and with the community. The Program and Conference were organized by the Department of Behavioral Sciences.

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archives of the European Space Agency and NASA have been made available to the world scientific community through the establishment of 15 national archives. The Israeli National Archive will function at TAU within the framework of the TAUVEX Project, directed by Dr. Noah Brosch of the School of Physics and Astronomy.

"The Elderly and Pets" was the title of a conference held by the "Animals and Society Project" of TAU's Zoology Department and the Herczeg Institute on Aging. Greetings were delivered by Prof. Joseph Terkel, Head of the Project, and Prof. Haim Hazan, Head of the Institute.

The TAU Sackler Faculty of Medicine's Felsenstein Medical Research Center (FMRC) held its third annual scientific conference. It was entitled "New Horizons in Cardiology: From Bench to Bedside" and was organized by Prof. Alexander Battler and Dr. Genia Kessler-Icekson.

The TAU Sackler Faculty of Medicine held a conference on "Technology in the Service of the Disabled in the Year 2000," under the auspices of Microsoft. Greetings were delivered by Mrs. Reuma Weitzman, wife of the President of the State of Israel; Prof. Niv Ahituv, Vice President and Director-General of TAU; and Prof. Menahem Fainaru, Dean of Medicine. Lectures were delivered by Dr. David Bolnick, Microsoft, USA; Prof. David Rose, Harvard University; and Dr. Christian Buehler, President of Association for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe. Participants in a round-table on "Closing the Gap between Needs and Reality" were Minister of Industry and Trade Ran Cohen and Chief Scientist of the Ministry Dr. Orna Berry. Organizer of the Conference was Dr. Dina Loebl.

Tel Aviv University, together with Ben Gurion University and the Shazar Center for the History of Israel, held a conference entitled "Hidden Knowledge, Hidden Forces: Magic, Demonology and Occult in Jewish Philosophy and in Jewish Life." Greetings were delivered by Dean of the Entin Faculty of Humanities Prof. Marcelo Dascal.

The TAU Debate Club held the national conference of the Israeli Higher Education Debate Clubs under the auspices of TAU's Buchmann Faculty of Law and the Students Union, with the participation of students of St. Mary's University, Texas, headed by Prof. Alan Cirlin. Greetings were delivered by Dean Eli Lederman and Dean of Humanities Marcelo Dascal. Honorary guest was Minister-without-Portfolio Michael Melchior. Among members of the jury was former Minister of Education Shulamith Aloni, Israel Prize Laureate for 2000.

The Porter School of Cultural Studies, Entin Faculty of Humanities, sponsored an evening for graduates of the Translators Track who presented their translations of French classics from French into Hebrew in the years 1997-1999. The evening was organized by the French Department and held in cooperation with the French Institute.

Dr. Yoshio Nishi, Senior Vice President and Director of R&D and Silicon Technology Development, Texas Instruments, gave a guest lecture entitled "Technology Trends and an R&D Model for Silicon Technology Development," at a seminar organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering - Systems, Fleischman Faculty of Engineering.

The International Forum (of the Department of Political Science, the Israeli English Speaking Friends and the Nahum Goldmann Chair in Diplomacy) hosted the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic, Maros Sefcovic, who spoke on "Israel-Slovakia: Past, Present and Future Relations," chaired by Prof. Aharon Klieman.

A ceremony was held inaugurating Tektronix measurement equipment donated by EASTRONICS to the undergraduate electronics laboratory, the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering. Greetings were delivered by Michael Kenny, managing director of EASTRONICS, and Dean Gideon Langholz.

TAU's School of History, the Institute of German History and the Goethe Institute held an international conference entitled "From National-Socialism to the Federal Republic of Germany - Repression and Success?" Greetings were delivered by Dean Marcelo Dascal, Prof. J&uulm;rgen Kocka of Free University, Berlin, and Dr. Moshe Zuckermann of TAU.

The Genia Schreiber University Art Gallery, Katz Faculty of the Arts, hosted the exhibition, "Buildings and Vision From a Bird's Eye View: Tel Aviv in the Paintings of Zaritsky, 1930-1945." Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Mordechai Omer, Curator of the Gallery.

The eighth annual conference of Women and Gender Studies and Feminist Theory was held at TAU. An evening of poetry was held entitled "Women's Voices from the Americas: A Reading by Mary Crow of Her Own Poems and Her Translation of Latin American Poets."

The Prof. Dr. Raphael Taubenschlag Institute of Criminal Law hosted Dr. Kinfe Abraham, President of the Ethiopian International Institute for Peace and Development, Addis Ababa, to a lecture on "Conflicts in Africa and Human Rights: An Ethiopian Perspective," chaired by Prof. Asher Maoz, Head of the Institute.

The Department of Theater Arts in cooperation with the Cameri Theater held the first academic conference on the Theater of Hanoch Levin, the late Israeli playwright. The Conference was organized by Prof. Shimon Levy. Greetings at the opening session were delivered by President Itamar Rabinovich, Dean Eli Rozik-Rosen, and Director-General of the Cameri Theater, Noam Semel.

The Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies and the Department for Middle Eastern and African History held the annual lecture in memory of Prof. Uriel Dann. A eulogy was delivered by Dr. Meir Litvak. Prof. F. Gregory Gause III of the University of Vermont delivered a lecture on "Iraqi War Decisions." Daniel Zisenwine is the recipient of the Uriel and Lora Dann Memorial Scholarship.

Prof. Werner Eck of the Institut fur Altertumskunde, University of Koln, Germany, delivered the guest lecture of the Mortimer and Raymond Sackler Institute of Advanced Studies, on "Political Communication in Latin in Cities of the Roman East."

The TAU Students Union launched a petition-signing campaign for stricter sentences for rapists, on International Women's Day, in the presence of TAU's Prof. Yael (Yuli) Tamir, Minister of Absorption; Ron Huldai, Mayor of Tel Aviv; Prof. Itamar Rabinovich, TAU President; and Guy Kelner, Union Chairman.

The Cohen-Porter Fund for the Department of English hosted Prof. Thomas Postlewait of Ohio State University, who lectured on "Staging Twelfth Night at the Original Globe Theater."

Prof. Peter V. Hobbs of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, was guest speaker of the Yuval Ne'eman Distinguished Lectures in Geophysics, Atmosphere and Space Sciences, endowed by Raymond and Beverly Sackler. Prof. Hobbs lectured on "Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions."

APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS

Orly Shporer, a graduate student at TAU's Department of Biomedical Engineering, was awarded best poster at the annual conference of the Israeli Society for Biological and Medical Engineering. The title of the poster was "The Control of Circular Ferro Magnetic Micro-Particles by External Magnet."

TAU alumnus Dr. Tamar Almor, Chairperson of the Department of Management at the College of Management and Human Resources, was awarded the Yoram Rosenfeld Foundation Prize for International Financial Innovation in Advanced Technology of the Max Perlman Center for Global Business at TAU. The Prize was awarded to her at a conference moderated by Prof. Seev Neumann, Director of the Perlman Center, for her studies on NASDAQ-registered Israeli companies. Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Shmuel Kandel, Dean of the TAU Faculty of Management.

Alon Barnea was elected Chairperson of SHILUVIM, the Alumni Business Club of the Faculty of Engineering.

VISITS

Dr. Yoshio Nishi, Senior Vice President and Director of R&D and Silicon Technology Development, Texas Instruments, recently visited TAU and met with Vice President for Research and Development Yair Aharonowitz; Dean of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering Gideon Langholz; and Prof. Ehud Weinstein of the Department of Electrical Engineering-Systems.

Australian trade mission members including Bob Mansfield, AO, Chairman of Telstra; Prof. Robin King of the University of South Australia; Gregory Keeley, Executive Director of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, South Australia and Northern Territory; and Leon Kempler, Chairman of the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Victoria; met with President Itamar Rabinovich and Dean of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering Prof. Gideon Langholz while visiting Israel. Mr. Kempler was presented with the title, "Distinguished Friend of the Faculty of Engineering," in recognition of his active role in strengthening trade, industrial, economic and scientific relations between Australia and Israel and between the TAU Faculty of Engineering and Australian universities.

ABROAD

Mr. Michael Steinhardt was nominated as candidate for the Chairmanship of the Board of Governors of Tel Aviv University. The election for the new Chairman will take place on May 22, 2000.

Minister of Justice Dr. Yossi Beilin delivered in Zurich a lecture on peace and justice in the Middle East, in an event organized by the TAU Swiss Friends, the Switzerland-Israel Chamber of Commerce, and the Switzerland-Israel Association, Zurich Section.

TAU Vice President Yehiel Ben-Zvi attended a reception in honor of TAU Governor Michel Cukierman, who received the Legion d'honneur, conferred upon him by Christian Pierret, French State Secretary for Industry and Trade, at the Hotel des Ministres, Paris.

TAU mourns the passing away of Mr. Ralf Snow, Member of the Board of Governors and Vice President of the Toronto Chapter of the Canadian Friends of TAU.
