The Iron Age Roads to Busayra: A New Regional Survey in Edom, Jordan
Program Unit: Edom Lowlands
Ben-Yosef Erez

The steep topographic slope between the Jordanian plateau and the Wadi Arabah has always been a serious obstacle for transportation and traffic. New results from regional archaeological survey focusing on ancient Iron Age roads shed light on the transportation routes between Busayra, Wadi Arabah and the rich copper ore district of Faynan. In addition to identifying the road system in this area, numerous associated archaeological features suggest Iron Age construction activities made under centralized social power. The survey was conducted in the summer of 2007 as part of Edom Lowland Regional Archaeology Project (ELRAP) directed by Thomas Levy (UCSD) and Mohammad Najjar (DOAJ).
